Kitchens
Kitchens
Kitchens are important.
More than any other part of the house, the kitchen requires well considered design. The benefits that can be gained from a carefully planned and beautifully made kitchen cannot be overemphasized. A kitchen that is designed to work in harmony with the home and the family that live in it can be genuinely life enhancing. Good design, quality materials and the highest standards of craftsmanship combine to create an environment with integrity that will lift your spirits.
A contemporary kitchen is the most versatile and important space of any home. It’s where the family meet, eat and communicate. It’s where you share coffee with friends, where the kids do their homework and where a couple will relax at the end of the day.
A Beautiful Bespoke Kitchen — How Much Does It Cost?
Producing a genuinely bespoke kitchen is a time consuming business and this is reflected in the cost. Typically, our kitchens cost between £40,000 and £60,000 excluding VAT and appliances. Some projects cost less; some have cost considerably more. The costs can vary enormously depending on the choice of materials used and on the construction techniques employed.
Here you can view a sample kitchen quotation, view a sample kitchen plan and view a sample kitchen installation schedule.
Buying a mass produced kitchen from a High Street retailer is inevitably going to be cheaper than commissioning a bespoke Lethenty kitchen. We don’t feel we should apologise for that but we would like to explain where the money goes and what you get for it.
Our kitchens are very well made and are certainly more durable than mass production kitchens. We use the best quality hardware, Prime Baltic Birch ply and fabulous local hardwoods but these are not the main reasons for the difference in cost. It’s mainly because designing and making a kitchen purely as a one off is a completely different process – It’s not nearly as efficient as assembling a kitchen from a series of factory made units.
We design and make things well and that takes time. We also build them traditionally. There is no high tech CNC machinery churning out thousands of identical components ready to be assembled with plastic clips. We use simple, solid machinery which is better suited to small scale production and gives us total freedom in design. Of course, we could use cheaper construction methods or buy in mass produced kitchen components to cut costs but that’s not what we’re about.
It’s a satisfying and rewarding job - designing and making something purpose built and well made using the best of local timbers. It gives a sense of integrity to what we do and that’s something our clients value.
By contrast, larger kitchen retailers have a limited choice of design options and will produce a kitchen layout that is more based around the need to fit in a series of standard sized units than a design that would work best for you. Kitchen components are sourced from massive producers in Eastern Europe where the labour costs are so low and the scale of production is so high that the cost of a kitchen door is measured in pence rather than pounds. The kitchens themselves are of variable quality. Some of the German made kitchens are fairly well made but most are not. Often there is a lot of emphasis on style and very little consideration given to durability or to function. Self employed fitters are used to install these kitchens (which can be a bit of a hit or a miss affair). A huge proportion of the cost of a “ready made” kitchen is in the marketing – the advertising, the showrooms, glossy brochures, and well trained sales staff. A comparatively small proportion of your money goes towards what you really want – a durable and well made kitchen that will meet the needs of your family.
We are not in business to compete with High Street retailers. We are offering quite a different product and quite a different experience. It may not be quite so efficient but commissioning Lethenty Cabinetmakers to design, build and install your new kitchen will be a more personal and rewarding experience than simply picking from a list of standard units in a glossy brochure.
We sincerely believe that a well designed and beautifully built kitchen, made with integrity, fabulous materials and true attention to detail will really enhance your lives and your home for decades to come.

FAQs
The scale and complexity of the bespoke kitchen project will largely dictate the timescales, but allowing 5 months is a wise estimate.
For reference, a 'typical' project timeline would be:
Weeks 1-2 — Showroom visit, discussions, agreed direction, kitchen consultation at home
Weeks 3-5 — Scale drawings, initial quotation, customer consideration
Weeks 6-7 — Refinement of designs and fixed quote
Weeks 8-15 — Job added to workshop queue, kitchen constructed in workshop, client approves prior to finishing
Weeks 16-19 — Completion of kitchen and coordinating installation
We can and do source many different beautiful timbers from
across the world but we prefer to use what grows right on our doorstep –
Oak, Ash, Sycamore and Elm from the farms and estates of Aberdeenshire.
Lethenty Cabinetmakers make all of our kitchens from scratch, to exact specifications. This fully bespoke approach means every cupboard, cabinet, drawer and worktop are made, constructed and finished here in our Cairntradlin workshop.
