Whisky Tasting Table

Glen Garioch Distillery in Oldmeldrum is one of the hidden gems in the whisky aficionados’ grand tour of Scotland. It is our most easterly distillery and produces small batches of very fine malt whisky - distilled and matured traditionally since 1797.

Glen Garioch has a visitor centre and runs tours of the distillery. These tours usually culminate in the "bothy" where the visitors are given the opportunity to sample a few of the distillery's special small batch whiskies. The guests sit on benches around a circular table. It's a fairly basic table that's seen better days so it's usually hidden beneath a tablecloth.

The distillery manager approached us to explore the possibility of designing and making a bespoke tasting table - one that would properly reflect the integrity and quality of the whiskies they produce.

We keep a large stock of locally grown Oak, Elm and Ash timber and buried in our stacks of wood we had ten thick boards from a lovely Oak that was felled at Fingask in 2015. Fingask farm is only a couple of miles from the distillery so it seemed the obvious choice of timber.

The table was made to a simple and solid design. The uprights were angled to allow easy access for up to ten people. Traditional mortice and tenon construction were used throughout. The very centre of the table was inset with a disc of Aberdeenshire Sycamore, laser engraved with the distillery's trademark. We finished the table with a satin sheen lacquer which provides a tough and maintenance free surface that really brings out the beautiful golden colour and rich grain patterns of the Oak.

It's lovely to work on projects like this. We feel we are creating objects of integrity, with genuine local provenance. I'm hopeful that our table will provide the distillery with many decades of good service.
